As a climber Malham is one of the ‘UK must visit places’ alongside Pembroke, The Cromlech, Stanage and of course Horseshoe Quarry. The climbing stands out as exceptional, but what really makes it unique is the atmosphere, set in the rolling limestone hills close to the quaint villages of Malham and Airton. The Cove itself and the surrounding rock formations are a natural wonder, and on a nice day you’ll have to share it with tourists and school geography field trips, but even that adds to the experience: you’ll have an audience who think you are a crazy dude, even though you’ve been sat on a bolt for half an hour unable to figure out the warm up route! But the Cove is vast, over 80 meters high and 300 meters wide, and easily big enough to get away from it all. The Right Wing has a relaxed feel far away from the crowds, and the Upper Terrace is perched way up there overlooking the whole valley giving an incredible sense of exposure before even starting to climb.
