Last month, this column featured six of the best traditional routes in Britain. Ticklists, like shopping lists, are subject to change frequently and should be regarded as largely fictional. This list does, at least, have an element of truth: the following seven climbs are all really good ones. Sport climbing is not about fear, gear, or dealing with the elements. It’s about pushing yourself to the limit physically and mentally, and also about cruising up lovely routes in a beautiful setting. And it’s about moving over stone. To truly appreciate sport climbing is to be lost in movement, completely focused on the moves ahead and nothing more. The following routes represent seven very different versions of that experience, from the very big to the very small - and almost everything in between.
