New North Wales Bouldering Venue

Just when you thought North Wales couldn’t provide any more quality bouldering, someone goes and finds a new area near to (of all the most popular of places) Tremadog.

The Moel y Gest Quarries potential for bouldering was discovered by Andy Godber earlier in the year. However it appears he was not quite fast enough and Dave Noden and some others have been busy throughout June, nailing a number of problems, mostly from V7-V11.

Many of the problems take clear and strong lines on two main dolerite boulders. Other, smaller lines can also be found around these. Stand out problems in the quarry include Pinball Wizard V6, Pinch Arete V4 and Beatitudes Kiss V11. The landings in the quarries are often bad, with sharp angular blocks to land on so lots of bouldering pads are a must.

For a more detailed description of the Moel y Gest quarries, access, photos and first ascents visit www.dmm.com

Ground Up Productions has produced a topo as a pdf for all the new problems. Visit northwalesbouldering.com to see it.
