New Bouldering Walls Opening!

The massive expansion of indoor bouldering in the UK continues apace. April this year should see The Depot climbing centre opening in Leeds. This will bring the number of bouldering only walls in Leeds up to two with City Bloc having opened it’s doors to the public in February.

The growth of bouldering only climbing walls has been dramatic over the last few years. Their popularity reflects the massive increase in the number of climbers that boulder. It also reflects the accessibility of indoor bouldering to those who traditionally might never have gone climbing at all. With each new wall that opens the indoor climbing community grows significantly in that region. When bouldering walls open now they not only cater for climbers but they also create climbers.

All this is great news for boulderers. In the last few years and even months a number of walls have opened across the country. In 2009, apart from the City Bloc in  Leeds there has been the Shropshire Climbing Centre that just opened and the Depot is soon to come. In 2007/2008 two large walls opened in Bristol (The Climbing Academy) and Newcastle (Climb Newcastle). At the same time some smaller and less publicised walls opened, one in Durham (Durham Climbing Centre), one in the heart of the City of London (The Arch Climbing Wall) and one in Sutton (Craggy Island 2).

Plastic is still well and truly on the up in the UK.
