9a+ and 9b in a day for Chris Sharma

30 June 2011

A few weeks ago and just days before his 30th birthday Chris Sharma finished his long term project First Round First Minute in Margalef, Spain. As if climbing this steep, 25 move line that he had been trying for 3 years wasn’t enough, a few days ago he went on to climb a route of 9a+ and a route of 9b within just hours of each other.

Writing on her blog Daila Ojeda describes the day at Oliana:

After warming up in his last project bolted in Oliana (nice combination between "Papichulo" and "Pachamama") Chris tried "Chaxiraxi" 9b from the direct start and he fell in the last move of the boulder problem!! ayayai.. it was a really good climbing! After that, he is psyched to try his old project "Fight or flight" 9b and zaaass!! he sent it!! ole! And to finish the day he gave a burn on "Chaxi" 9a+ (just to remember this part of the route) and yes sir! he put it in his pocket!

Whilst the sport climbing world is rightly focused on the amazing achievements of Adam Ondra at the moment, it’s good to see there are still other climbers whose efforts are headline worthy. Chirs Sharma might have turned 30 but it appears there’s plenty of hard climbing left in him.
