Conterfeit versions of several products made by the French climbing gear manufacturer Petzl have been discovered by the company. Believed to have been made in China these counterfeits have serious defects that affect their performance and strength.
The fake products that have been tested have been found to be more susceptible to fail at low loads or under normal use and do not meet UIAA or CE safety standards. According to Petzl the fake products are also very difficult to spot as design, colour, branding, batch numbers etc have all been reproduced carefully.
Thus far only a small number of counterfeits have been discovered and Petzl have not reported where they were found, aside from to say that none of them were in North America.
